Iran Announces Thursday as First Day of the Holy Month of Ramadan

Iran (IMNA) – In a statement released on Wednesday night, the Estehlal Headquarters, which operates under the supervision of the Office of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, confirmed that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan was observed. Based on this sighting, Thursday has been designated as the first day of the holy month of fasting in Iran.

The announcement follows the traditional Islamic practice of determining the start of lunar months through physical moon sighting. The confirmation aligns Iran with several other countries that begin Ramadan a day after the moon is observed.

While the holy month commenced on Wednesday in some Muslim-majority nations, others — including Iran and Iraq — have declared Thursday as the official start of Ramadan.

Ramadan, one of the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide through daily fasting from dawn to dusk. During this period, the faithful abstain from food and drink throughout daylight hours and dedicate themselves to prayer, reflection, and acts of charity. Communities also come together for collective worship and shared evening meals, marking the spiritual and communal significance of the blessed month.
